What is BS EN ISO 9241?

BS EN ISO 9241 is a set of standards that relates to the design of interactive systems, specifically in terms of human-centered design. The standards are meant to provide guidance to designers and developers of interactive systems in order to ensure that these systems are effective, efficient, and user-friendly.

The standard is broken down into a number of parts, each of which covers a different aspect of the design process. Some of the parts include:

  • Part 2: Guidance on task requirements
  • Part 3: Guidance on visual display requirements
  • Part 4: Keyboard requirements
  • Part 5: Workstation layout and postural requirements
  • Part 6: Guidance on the design of workstations for office tasks
  • Part 9: Requirements for non-keyboard input devices

Overall, the standard provides a framework for the design of interactive systems that takes into account the needs and abilities of users, as well as the context in which the system will be used. By following the guidance provided by BS EN ISO 9241, designers can create systems that are intuitive, efficient, and effective, leading to better user experiences and improved productivity.

Duro heavy duty monitor arm for 3 or 6 computer screens

Our Kardo and Duro heavy duty monitor arms have been designed to help meet the BS EN ISO 9241 standard, particularly workstation layout and postural requirements which focuses on setting up a computer workstation to minimise physical strain and maximise comfort and efficiency.

How monitor arms help meet BS EN ISO 9241

Monitor arms enable ergonomic flexibility, directly supporting the goals of BS EN ISO 9241 by helping users set up their workstations in a way that minimises strain and maximises comfort and efficient working.

Suitable screen height and angle
The standard recommends that the top of the computer screen should be at or just below eye level. A monitor arm makes it easy to raise/lower and tilt the computer screen(s) to achieve this. With proper height and angle adjustments, users can avoid bending their necks or straining their eyes—core goals of the standard.

Encourage neutral posture
Adjustability helps users maintain a neutral posture, keeping their head, neck, and back aligned—a big focus of BS EN ISO 9241.

Flexible viewing distance
ISO 9241 suggests screens be positioned at a comfortable viewing distance, typically 50–70 cm. Monitor arms allow easy adjustment of computer screens to get that ideal distance.

Levo dynamic monitor arm for multiple users

Accommodate multiple users
For shared workstations or hot-desking environments, monitor arms make it easy to reconfigure setups quickly and easily. Our Levo dynamic monitor arm with dual screen mount is ideal for hot-desking workplaces.

Clear desk space
While this isn’t directly ergonomic, having more desk space contributes to a cleaner, less stressful workspace, free from clutter – which complements the standard’s human-centred focus.
